Elephant cull to return
IT IS the issue that has bitterly divided
game managers, conservationists and
animal rights groups for years. But the South
African Government has finally concluded it will have to lift a moratorium on the culling of native elephants to cope with a booming
population. Amid
protest and expressions of relief, the
Environment Minister, Martinus van Schalkwyk, said the number of elephants in national parks and private reserves had increased from 8000 to nearly 20,000 in just over a
decade.
