Provide a short history of the stakeholder group
a. What is their origin? Sudan gained independence in 1956 after signing a treaty with Egypt and Britain. The first Sudanese War between the North and the South lasted from 1955-1972. The Second Sudanese War lasted from 1983-2005, concluding with the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. During this time, the Ugandan Government supported the southern forces while Khartoum was supporting the LRA, each using the rebel groups as “proxy” fighters. While relations between Khartoum and Juba have been relatively stable for the past couple of years, tensions flared again at the end of 2007, calling into question the sustainability of the CPA. In recent years, Khartoum has been preoccupied in Darfur. Sudan has also experienced instability in the east and in its relationship with Chad.
