TCL: The group is primarily a cultural grouping of Igbo demanding independence from Nigeria.
MIL: MASSOB frequently clashes violently with police, although the group repeatedly denies any militancy. IISS classifies the group as militant.
Stakeholder size (number of people): 15 million people in former Biafran state; approximately 1000 MASSOB members in jail; members all over the world

a. What is their origin? In May 1967 the Eastern Region of Nigeria formally seceded to form Biafra, but the new state had failed by 1970. The Nigerian government blockaded the new state, and up to one million people were believed to have died from starvation.

• Reemerged in 1999 when sent the Biafran Bill of Rights to the UN
